What is African Studies? African Studies is the study of Africa continent, culture, heritage, values, and societies

Our African studies will foster you with a gateway into the comprehensive study of the African experience across major disciplines in the social sciences and humanities, African experience here in Ireland, around the world with global perceptive with a unique advantage and sharpened knowledge about African Caribbean issues within historical and contemporary contexts interrelated.

Africa is a second largest region in the world. Today Africa is perceived as the fastest growing economies in the world with great potential economy power, a continent of thousands of languages, dialects and cultures, unparalleled eco-diversity, and over a billion vibrant and innovative Africans. The relevance of African issues is apparent in our everyday lives; we use African products, exports, or mineral resources sometimes unknowingly knowingly.

African studies are the study of Africa continent, especially the continent's cultures, heritage, people, landscape, tribe, languages and societies. The field includes the study of Africa's history, demography, culture, politics, economy, diverse languages, and religion, values, and indigenous beliefs. A specialist in African studies is often referred to as an "Africanist". A key focus of the discipline is to interrogate epistemological approaches, theories and methods in traditional disciplines using a critical lens that inserts African-centered ways of knowing and references to the key players.

African Studies helped to open a space for other identity-based programs, and it continues to debunk myths about white privilege, male power, women’s role on the continent evolution of history and ethnocentrism. When done in a compassionate and thoughtful way, African Studies also could offer effective challenges to the negative narratives that needed to be erase in our community.

Africana, African, or Africology studies, is the multidisciplinary study of the acclaimed second largest continent histories, politics, and cultures of peoples of African origin in both Africa, African Descendants, and the African living in diaspora all around the world
